Abstract: Surgery is the only effective treatment for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Unless serious contraindications prohibit it, repair should be undertaken in all patients with a known aneurysm while it is still an elective procedure. Complication and mortality rates increase dramatically when an aneurysm ruptures and surgery becomes an emergency procedure. In this article, the authors discuss what is known about formation and rupture of aneurysms, including patients at risk. In addition, they summarize diagnostic procedures and preoperative, operative, and nonoperative patient care.
